“Varieties of Stainless Steel for Pharmaceutical Applications”

“Corrosion resistance, durability, ease of sanitation, and compatibility with sterile conditions are the unique characteristics that make stainless steel an exceptional choice for the pharmaceutical industry.

One of the main reasons stainless steel is needed in the pharmaceutical industry is to prevent interaction between product contact parts and the product being manufactured. If these parts interact with the product, it can lead to an increase in impurities, directly impacting the quality of the product.

Another reason stainless steel is indispensable in the pharmaceutical industry is its rust and stain resistance, facilitating easy cleaning. This is crucial as the pharmaceutical sector deals with various products, preventing cross-contamination.

Common types of stainless steel used in Pharma include:

  • Austenitic Stainless Steel: 304, 316, 316L
  • Duplex Stainless Steel: 2205
  • Ferritic Stainless Steel: 430, 446
  • Martensitic Stainless Steel: 410, 420

Austenitic stainless steel with 18% chromium and 8% nickel is the most widely used among the above due to its high corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, and ease of sterilization. It includes variants such as SS316, SS316L, and SS304. Stainless steel 316 offers resistance against chlorides and acids, making it suitable for product contact parts. Its low-carbon variant, 316L, experiences less carbide precipitation, making it easier to weld while maintaining corrosion resistance. Additionally, 304 stainless steel is commonly utilized in food processing equipment, kitchen appliances, and architectural structures.”
