Disintegration time of Tablets and its Importance
Importance of Tablet Disintegration and Disintegration Times of Different Types of Tablets
Disintegration is an important step for a tablet formulation as it allows the tablet to break down into smaller particles within an appropriate time frame after ingestion. Our today’s article also mainly focuses on the disintegration time of different types of tablets. Here times are normal ranges and for each product, time varies as per individual monographs. let us know the importance of disintegration in tablet formulations.
Importance of disintegration:
1. Consistency: Consistent disintegration times are important as we all know each tablet formulation we derive disintegration times. It is essential for uniformity in drug delivery.
2. Quality Control: It is important to ensure tablets meet pharmacopeial standards.
3.Bioavailabity of the API depends on the disintegration.
4.So, disintegration is a rate limiting step for drug dissolution, if tablet does not disintegrate efficiently, the disintegration process will be slow.
- Disintegration time for Uncoated Tablets – Not more than 15 min in water with disc 37±2 degre cesius.or as per individual monograph
- For film coated Tablets not more than 30 min
- Enteric coated tablets – Should be intact for 2 hour in 0.1 normal hcl and disintegrate in 60 minutes phosphate buffer
- Effervescent tablets should disintegrate before taking in mouth and should disintegrate in 5 min. 250 ml water at 20-30 degree Celsius as per IP and 5min in 200 ml water at 15-25 degree Celsius as per BP.
- Disintegration time for sugar coated tablets is 60 minutes
- Dispersible tablets should disintegrate in 3 minutes
