SOP for Paste Kettle

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
Here is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for operating a Paste Kettle, commonly used in pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries for preparing binder solutions or pastes.
1. Purpose
To lay down a procedure for the safe and efficient operation and cleaning of the paste kettle used for preparing pastes or binder solutions.
2. Scope
Applicable to all personnel involved in the preparation of binder solution using the paste kettle in the manufacturing area.
3. Responsibility
-
Machine Operator: To operate and clean the paste kettle as per SOP.
-
Production Supervisor: To ensure SOP compliance and training.
-
QA/QC Department: To verify and approve cleaning and operation records.
4. Equipment/Materials Required
-
Paste kettle
-
Water and cleaning agents
-
PPE (gloves, goggles, apron)
-
Binder ingredients (e.g., starch, PVP, etc.)
5. Procedure
5.1 Pre-Start Checks
-
Ensure kettle is clean and free of any residual material.
-
Check all valves, jackets, temperature gauges, and agitators are intact.
-
Verify calibration of temperature sensors (if applicable).
-
Wear appropriate PPE before starting.
5.2 Operation
-
Charging the Ingredients:
-
Open the lid and charge purified water as per batch size.
-
Start the heating by switching on the jacket (steam/electrical).
-
Monitor temperature using the control panel (usually 60–80°C).
-
Slowly add binder ingredients while stirring continuously.
-
Continue heating and mixing until a uniform paste is formed.
-
-
Monitoring:
-
Continuously monitor temperature and viscosity.
-
Avoid overheating or localized burning.
-
-
Discharge:
-
Stop heating once the desired consistency is achieved.
-
Open the discharge valve to collect the binder into clean, labeled containers.
-
5.3 Cleaning Procedure
-
Switch off the power and let the kettle cool down.
-
Drain residual material.
-
Clean internal surfaces with purified water or approved detergent.
-
Use a soft brush for internal surfaces; do not use abrasive materials.
-
Rinse thoroughly to remove cleaning agents.
-
Dry with clean air or lint-free cloth.
-
Record cleaning in the equipment logbook.
6. Safety Precautions
-
Do not open the lid while the kettle is under pressure or heating.
-
Ensure all safety interlocks are working.
-
Use PPE to avoid burns or exposure to chemicals.
-
Handle hot surfaces with care.
7. Documentation
-
Equipment logbook (Operation & Cleaning)
-
Batch manufacturing record (BMR)
-
