SOP for Conveyor Belt in Packing

1.0 Purpose
To establish a uniform procedure for the operation, cleaning, and maintenance of the conveyor belt used in the packing section to ensure smooth functioning and compliance with cGMP requirements.
2.0 Scope
This SOP applies to all conveyor belts used in the primary and secondary packing sections of [Company Name].
3.0 Responsibility

Packing Operator: To operate and clean the conveyor belt as per procedure.

Packing Supervisor: To ensure proper functioning and compliance of the conveyor belt.

Engineering/Maintenance: To attend breakdowns, preventive maintenance, and calibration (if applicable).

QA: To verify compliance during routine checks.
4.0 Definitions

Conveyor Belt: A mechanical system used to transport products and packaging material along the packing line.
5.0 Procedure
5.1 Operation
-
Ensure that the conveyor belt is clean and free from any previous product remnants before starting.

Check belt alignment, speed settings, and guards before operation.
-
Switch on the main power supply and ensure the emergency stop button is functional.
-
Start the conveyor belt using the start switch.
-
Ensure smooth movement of cartons, blisters, bottles, or strips without jamming.
-
Do not overload the conveyor.
-
In case of any unusual noise, vibration, or belt misalignment, stop the conveyor immediately and inform maintenance.

Use the emergency stop button in case of any unsafe condition.
5.2 Cleaning
Type A – Batch-to-Batch / Product-to-Product Changeover Cleaning

Switch off the conveyor belt and disconnect the power supply.

Remove all packing materials and product remnants from the belt surface.

Wipe the belt surface with a clean, lint-free cloth soaked in approved disinfectant/IPA solution.
-
Clean side guards, rollers, and nearby surfaces.
-
Allow the surface to dry completely.

Record the cleaning activity in the equipment logbook.
Type B – Daily Cleaning

At the end of the shift, switch off the conveyor.
-
Remove dust, labels, or product residues using a dry lint-free cloth.
-
Wipe with IPA/disinfectant if required.
5.3 Maintenance

Preventive maintenance to be carried out as per the engineering schedule.

Check for belt wear, alignment, lubrication, and tension.
-
Replace worn-out belts and rollers as per manufacturer recommendations.
-
Maintenance details to be recorded in the equipment history card/logbook.
6.0 Safety Precautions

Do not insert hands or tools under the running belt.
-
Always switch off power before cleaning or maintenance.
-
Ensure guards are in place before starting the conveyor.
-
Only trained personnel should operate the conveyor belt.
