What is Bulk Density?

Bulk density is defined as the ratio for mass of untapped powder sample and its volume including the void spaces between particles. By this you can understand that bulk density depends on two things, one is density of the powder sample and other is spatial arrangement of powder particles.

How To Calculate Bulk Density?

The following formula is used for the calculation of bulk density and its very easy to remember the formula too as it is dependent on the mass and the volume.

Bulk density (BD) = Mass (m) / Volume (v)

Importance of Bulk Density:

  • BD of the powders as well as granules too is very important factor in making the capacity calculations, like how much quantity of material we can put in an equipment.
  • The capacity of the particular equipment like bin blender, double cone blender etc. is determined based on the BD of the material to be used.

How to Perform the Bulk density measurement

  1. Take powder or granules of known quantity, let us assume the quantity as 100 g
  2. Now Pour the material carefully into the 250ml measuring cylinder
  3. Note down the volume occupied by the powder or granules taken without shaking or tapping, let the obtained volume be 200ml
  4. Now we have mass = 100g and Volume =  200ml
  5. Now as we know BD = m/v
  6. Now put the values in the above formula we get

BD = 100 ÷ 200 ⇒ 0.5 g/ml

Note:   Bulk density is represented in gram per ml
